Lexington pest control

We Kentucky's top experts in rodent control. We are not a typical Lexington rat removal or pest control company. We don't treat rats or mice like insects, because they are not - they are mammals! You can't just use poison to get rid of them, like you can with insects. Unlike most Lexington pest control, we focus on complete and permanent solutions. We don't just use poison every month. We solve your rodent problem forever, by following these steps:

  • Inspect the entire house, ground to roof, and the attic
  • Seal shut all entry areas, no matter how small, with steel
  • Set a dozen or more rat or mouse traps in the house and attic
  • Remove all rodents as they are caught and monitor for activity
  • Once there is no more activity and no more caught, we're done
  • When necessary, we clean rodent droppings, replace insulation, and repair chewed electric wires

Lexington Rodent Removal Tip:

What can I do about a trap-shy rat?
Catching trap-shy rats can prove to be very difficult and frustrating for homeowners and pest eliminators, among others.

Trap-shyness could easily be mistaken for neophobia. Neophobia is the fear or hatred of new or unfamiliar things. It's in the nature of rodents to have neophobia because they go out frequently, and they keep marking their territories with their excrements (urine, droppings, rub marks). While neophobia is natural for rodents, trap-shyness is an adaptive behavior. Frequent contact and escapes from traps make them develop a fear for it and understand that it should be avoided in their next escapade. The rat not only develops this behavior, but they also perfect it making it more difficult to trap them. The major cause of this behavior is the rate at which missing with the traps occurs rather than kills.

So how can you catch a trap-shy rat?
Here are some ways to catch a trap-shy rat:

Even if you are familiar with the whole procedure, it is best to remember that each job is different. The behavior of pests, rodents in particular, is dependent on the environment. The process in which the rat has adapted to its environment should be considered, and the knowledge gotten from this observation should then be applied when trying to catch the trap-shy rat.

Search for details
When trapping a trap-shy rat, it is essential that you check for details. Despite being stressful, you can check for the trails left behind by the rat when it moved about. This approach leads you directly to the rodent's location, and when you know the hiding place, it will be easier to catch the rat.

rodent trapping Use of pre-baited trap
Pre-baiting is done by placing bait on a trap without setting the trap. The rat feeds off the bait for some time and soon gets used to the trap. It becomes less fearful of the trap and lowers its guard when in contact with it. By doing this, the time it takes to catch the rat decreases, and the rate at which the trap will work increases.

Careful selection of baits
Some factors should be considered when choosing baits. They are environmental and weather factors. If the rat is located in a place where a particular kind of food nutrient is always available, use a bait that contains another essential nutrient the rat is lacking. For example, if the rat you want to bait lives in a place where corn is stored, you can use peanut butter as bait since the rat has been feeding on carbohydrates and is lacking protein and fat. For the weather factor, it's fairly similar; using baits that are difficult for the rat to find during a particular season will be more effective. For example, during the summer and winter, eating dried food frequently will make the rat crave for some moisture. So, providing a bait that has what the rat is lacking or will crave is essential and beneficial.

Glue boards with no flavor
The repeated usage of a particular bait can reduce the effectiveness of the trap. Repeated usage of a particular bait makes the rat more sensitive to danger. So instead of using flavored glue boards, use unflavored glue boards instead, thereby preventing the rat from developing a fear of a particular flavor.

Strategically place traps
The location for the placements of the rat traps and the ability for the rat to escape should be carefully considered. Placing traps at random places teaches the rat to be trap-shy. Instead, the trap should be strategically placed in locations that can easily attract the attention of the rat. Also, the design of the trap should be changed from time to time and also for the location; the effectiveness of the trap could be dependent on it being used outdoors or indoors.
